I read today about the case of a 40 year-old mother from the depressed city of Hamtramck, Michigan (a town completely surrounded by the urban blight and utter Third World corruption of the once-proud city of Detroit), who was caught being a little too strict on a couple of her children (she has 5 of them).  Seems she’d gotten into the habit of tossing her 4 year-old into a heated stove after giving her “boo-boos” around the eyes.  Stating that her mom…”cooks me like a turkey in the oven,” the little girl also related how Mommy Dearest liked to use her face for target practice whenever the mood came upon her.  To top it off, Hamtramck cops also say our current nominee for Mother of the Year occasionally beat on another daughter (a 6 year-old) with a metal bar.  Probably to strengthen her biceps enough to really give that naughty 4 year-old what she had coming to her.

Stating that “all the kids are terrified of their mother,” city cops have had them placed into protective custody, much like a witness to a mob hit would be stashed away in fear of the wrath of Don Corleone coming down upon his head.

What is it about our society these days that’s creating these urban monsters, and why, oh why, are we still willing to give some benefit of the doubt to mothers who have these children only to later beat or burn them to death?  Predictably enough, the father of the kids says his wife is actually…”a fantastic mother.  She’s a very loving mother.  She has a mental illness…”  Well.  I suppose having children must have been some form of psychotherapy, and that it’s really not the woman’s fault when these kids are brutalized and tortured because, you know…”the things that she has done are only when she’s off medication…” (This, also according to the kids’ father).

I confess to no small amount of bafflement.  It’s obvious from reading the various news stories that this isn’t the first time the mother’s done these things, yet we hear protestations from the so-called “father” that she’s really a good egg.  And I wonder what REAL man would stand idly by while his children are hacked at and bludgeoned or cooked like so much beef?  Yes, this woman’s a veritable June Cleaver from the iconic 50s TV series Leave it to Beaver. Only, I don’t recall the Barbara Billingsley character going off on The Beaver like an escapee from one of those Saw “hack ‘em up” movies, which this woman seemed to do with depressing regularity.

I know, I know…it’s all somehow “society’s fault.”  We’ve all failed her, you see?  She has no responsibility because she’s sick, and can’t help herself.  Perhaps, but perhaps not.  At some point, it seems, she had to have made a conscious decision to forgo her medications.  And some social worker (and there’s always a failure of the social service system in cases like this) somewhere at some time chose to turn a blind eye to these acts of cold-blooded brutality, most likely out of some misguided attempt to keep “the family unit” together.  If this is a family, it most closely resembles something Charles Manson might have overseen back in the 60s. Only that would be an insult to Charley and the rest of the misbegotten unfortunates who fell under his sway.
